The shortest oil filter I know of is the Fram #3512. It is essentially a short ph-8. Fits most ford 6&8s. 2 3/4" tall. It is listed for Renaults.
According to the box, it crosses over to AC X21, Mopar L-319, Motorcraft FL-313, Purolator FC-101, Purolator FCO-101.
I ran one for years on a ford 289 in my truck. Should fit your HAMB well.
