What’s the best way to clean up old magnesium wheels? We have a set of American 12 spoke magnesium wheels for the front of our nostalgia C/Gasser. The wheels are still in great shape but have turned grey for sitting up on the shelf for the last 30 years. The oxidation is pretty thick meaning it doesn’t just wipe off to review the polished magnesium anymore. Any suggestions?
Thank you.

Try some SOS pads and some H20 (rub lightly) and then some Maguires mag polish, I used scotchbrite and Maguires polish on Butches rear mags and they turned out pretty nice I thought. The SOS pads might have a finer finish than the scotchbrite and possibly require less elbow grease with the mag polish, Good Luck!!

harbor freight sells 0000 or 00000 steel wool (ultra fine) for a couple of bucks. Its much finer than sos. You can rub flour or cornstarch on to pick up the remaining black sludge. Yes, its true, I actually have cleaned something before... Ron

WOW! I Orderd some of that stuff!!! My K-88 has 1958 3X5 spindle mount Snow Flake reversibles on the front and 1960 10X15 Cereal Bowls on the back, In my youth I spent about 1 bizillion hours polishing Mag wheels of the guys I hung around. I let my wheels go dark cause I can't find a kid to do the polishing for me. If this stuff works as the website claims I'll have polished Mag Wheels on the old K-88 when it returns to compettion in Open wheel.

Yep, that Gibbs stuff really does work. Remove the wheel and spray it on the back side and let sit for several days to penetrate into the magnesium. After several days you can see the dark grey lighten. Same on the polished side. Wipe off the polished side and apply Master Formula metal gloss 714 238-1129 with very easy rubbing to achieve a very bright shine. For a lasting finish use there Sealer Gloss. This is the only stuff I have found to last more than 2-3 weeks on a mag wheel.
If your car sits for a long period, spray the Gibbs on the mag wheels and it will preserve the shine.

All that white stuff is Magnesium that has ate away and lifted, Magnesium eats itself from the inside out,... Water is the worse thing to let touch Magnesium, along with the wheels being in a humid enviroment. You can get the stuff that is posted above and spray them all down really well, and then wipe/scrub them really well with scotch brite., and then repeat,..that will keep it that grey original finish,...If you want to make the shine or polished,.. Use,.(and depending on how pitted they are) get some wd-40 spray them down and lightly wet sand them with 400, 800,.1200 grit wet/dry qaulity sand paper,. DO NOT BEAD OR SAND BLAST THE MAGNESIUM WHEELS,.. Once you have gone threw the 3 step sanding , and all is looking smooth, rince with a non chlorinated brake clean,..and bust out your Mothers Mag polish and some cotton towels and they will BLING BLING in 1 or 2 polishes,..... I just did a set of american 5 spokes pictured below,..and also the set of 16x13`s on my vega flopper. These are with 2 polishings by hand,..about 15 minutes each Vic
