I am looking to buy a tubing bender, mostly for 1.625" cromo. Thinking jd2. Does anyone have experience (good or bad) with these or similar? As I will use it very seldom, I am thinking non hydraulic. On this message board Im sure there is an opinion or 2... Thanks, Ron

We built my chromoly cage using my brother in laws manual JD2 bender . I'm 6'1" 195lbs. - he's 6'5" and a good 250 lbs and we had to do some serious grunting to get that tubing to bend a 90 degree angle...Mild steel bends like butter but chromoly is tough! You might want to think about the hydraulics

hi ron! i have a jd2 bender. they do work great but as mentioned, dom and chromalloy are a lot harder on the muscles. you are more than welcome to come by and try it out and see. bring your own metal though, i don't have any. i have 1 and 5/8th and 1 and 3/4 dies. ps, i have a lot of web sites on making tube benders and bend formulas.

I've had my JD2 bender for about 10 years now and love it! Bought the Model-2 with the floor mount, dergee wheel and about 8 different dies for around two grand. It also does a good job on thin wall 4130.
Yeah, It's a bit of work to bend a piece of 1 5/8"-.095 around a 7 1/2" radius, but if you use a longer lever it's not too bad. What I like most about it is the fact it's a true radius bender, meaning the die rotates in a true circle instead of a cam like some others. You can also control the spring back, which keeps the tube from kinking or "Snake Heading".
The hydralic assist makes bending a slow and laborious task. You can do the same thing in 1/10th the time with the manual deal. If the hydraulics rorated the die instead of the lever, it would be a different story, but you're talking about a whole lot more money.

Ron, I have the JD2 and our cage was bent using it (1.625OD .134 wall Mild Steel) (no, it does not bend like butter)
The tip from Dave T about putting a long arm over the handle is just about a necessity for us normal size folks. Also securely bolting the thing down to something substantial.
A friend just recently borrowed the bender and used a port-a-power to make the bends easier. You still have to re-set the arm for each "bite" but you don't get so worn out from the effort. I have not yet used this myself (the P-a-P) but he says it really helped. He did his whole cage on his altered.

Nothing up my sleeve... I am currently legal to 8.50, but ran 8.36 on a mild tune up at phoenix. Adding some bars from main cage to frt suspension, and cage around my feet, funny cage around head to cert 7.50. Also "working" - read as collecting parts for - a car for Sandy. 73 Ford Maverick. Really mild at first, then step it up a bit. We have a stock 351W/C4 to start with, then al heads & hilborn inj. nothing crazy, she wants it street/strip....but she's driven my truck on the street with a big roller small block ford before. Plus I still have the 460 I ran D/G with. I habitually buy a tool to do whatever I need rather than pay someone else to do it. Dont always save anything, but Ive got the tool when done, and find it satisfying to do it myself. Plus I keep being drawn to the Hambsters....Sure looks fun. As soon as I heard the jd2 was what Dave Tuttle uses, that pretty much made up my mind as I was already leaning strongly that way. Now just shopping for a deal. Ron
