I spoke with Lonnie this afternoon, from NHRA... Trying to get a chassis cert. He told me that the Fee for the Chassis cert had doubled to $150 for a spm cert. And $200 for a Pro cert. also that the fees for licenses and competition numbers have doubled as well. These increases took affect as of today.
I hate to bring you this news. But I had to share.

Now you know why I became a spectator..But the NHRA charges so much for the big show racing, The average guy stays home and watches it on tv...

Back in the late 80s we gave up our 9 second Mopar because of having a young family, the escalating cost of racing with all the new BS we had to contend with. SFI this, SFI that, the implementation of required gear, chassis inspections. Safer, yes. But at a huge cost to a racer on a tight budget. We could no longer afford to play, so we "retired." When we came back into the scene, we decided to keep it 10 seconds flat or slower and have fun. I gotta say that there are a lot less expensive and more practical ways to run mid 11s. But that little 11 second stick shift car is just as much fun than the auto trans Mopar was. Unfortunately, these new increases may "retire" some more racers. Then again, maybe some will just "Back 'er down" a little.

I really miss being able to race more . It has become unaffordable for the average guy without sponsors . Up until LACR got real bad with the giant sand pit next to it I really enjoyed racing there . It was a little over an hour from my home - Get in Friday night for $15 and get 5 or 6 time runs in easy then get in the trophy race and try to win another dust collector , find some category or two to race in on Saturday and Sunday for not much money and just have fun! I could compete in 5 different races and put 20 to 30 passes down the 1/4 mile in one weekend and spend less than it costs for me to get in the gate at Fontana or Famoso these days for one race . Look at Speedworlds calender of events , they have similar programs going , something to race in every week and it's affordable! Why don't we have something like that here in So-Cal where drag racing and hot rodding all began? I must be getting old and grumpy....The amount that NHRA has increased the annual fees is alot but it's nothing in comparison to how much it costs to take your car to the track for 1 race around here . Going to 4 or 5 events a year where you get 2 or 3 time runs and then into eliminations just doesn't satisfy my Drag Racing cravings...I want more! . Time to get back on a bicycle and go fast again and stop sounding like an old grumpy guy ;D

Eric, did you use to race bicycles too? It's really amazing how many drag racers are former bike racers. I had a category 4 road license at one time and did a couple races before I decided road racing was two or three hours of pain and not all that much fun! Went off road racing and had a lot more fun. Of course those pain sessions on the road definitely helped even there as back in those days most off road racers didn't do any road training, so they couldn't climb well and they didn't know how to go fast on the flats. I still have my road bike.

NHRA is a sinking ship and their looking at the sportsman racers as a lifeline. They don't seem to know the difference between enthusiasm and obsession and therefore are going to take advantage of those who are their bread and butter.
Especially us on the west coast where NHRA has a monopoly.

Well for the first time in 8 years I am glad I moved to the mid-west from Long Beach, we have 1 nhra track here and 3 outlaw tracks (Missouri)and my license expired last month and next my national Dragster Mag Exp, the out law tracks pay as well if not better than nhra so there is no incentive to run nhra anymore plus I'm over 55+ by a decade. I don't get my chassis cert ed anymore so lets see what I save now : Doc 50.00, EKG 150.00 Chassis cert 150 , national Dragster 129, LIC 120, Total about 500.00 not including Re Cert fees. (Belts,Helmet,Firesuit, etc) Yep that should do it for me. I will stick to the outlaw Tracks from now on. [glow=red,2,300] Have A nice Life NHRA .[/glow]
