I think the timing retard stays on until it revs past 1200rpm or so - make sure you bring the motor up as soon as it starts to kick off the timing retard - Make sure you really have 36 degrees total advance with a good digital timing light

Also.. Check for a bent valve or one that is just not seated properly..Had same problem once..Do a leak down test.. Easy to find that way..

I would try less retard. Sounds odd, but when i had a start retard, it liked about 9-10* max. When i went back to 20, it would crank forever before it started

I start my blown alcohol car on 24 volts. I have a powermaster starter. it spins the motor about 4000 RPM i think I run a mag, it fire instantly (30* usually in the mag, static). My motor is 11:1, and a 6-71
