So here's a few questions... I've got a 72 nova project, and I'm looking to put an aftermarket seat in it, this car doesn't have a rollbar (hence the confusion since the rulebook says an aftermarket seat needs to be mounted to the rollbar). 1) Are there going to be any restrictions for using an aftermarket seat? Do I need to run the factory seatbelts? 2) I'm a big guy, the seat is going to be mounted further back than the factory mounting location, is this going to bring about any problems in terms of NHRA regulations? Oh, and to clarify, when I say aftermarket seat I'm thinking an aluminum seat. I appreciate it guys, and hopefully I'll see you all in June

Planning to run E-Gas, so I know in terms of E.T. i'll be getting close to needing a rollbar but I'm not sure what sort of numbers the car is going to put up and want to save a little weight.

To run 11.60 in the heat of the summer you'll have to be able to run 11.30's in good air...The weight of a roll bar might slow you down a tenth . it might save your life too . Be safe- put a roll bar in it - people die on the freeway going 65mph all the time

What Eric said. 2X on the roll bar. Best thing you can do. Just think, then you'll have a place to mount the seat. ;D

Rollbar. Most aftermarket seats are mounted to a rollbar. Most racers prefer to buy a light weight seat. Therefore most seats are just strong enough to be safe if they are supported by a rollbar. There are some really nice seats out there that are well self supported, but not budget. If you do decide to skip the rollbar, you are better off using a factory seat, perhaps from another application. Ford Maverick buckets are inexpensive in wrecking yards &easy to mount to any floor. Just my 2 cents. Ron 7306 B/G

As far as I can tell you only need to mount the seat to the rollbar if you indeed have a rollbar.
BUT, as Gribble said most of the aluminum seats are not designed to be used without the support of the rollbar or cage structure.
In any case you will want to be very sure that the seat has enough additional structural support to be safe. And the addition of a roll bar (even on a street car) is always a good idea. The life you save will be your own. Even a minor incident can put you in the hospital but a rollbar will make injury less likely.

Just dial 'Don Renfrow crash' on your search engine and you'll see why a roll bar is a good idea and why attaching the seat in a structurally sound manner is a GREAT idea. As the old saying goes "Better safe than sorry."

Another lesson to be learned from the video of that crash is in the audio. Turn up the volume and you will hear that the driver hits the throttle again after he is already in the other lane.
I have several friends who have wrecked cars for the same reason. In drag racing the concept of "saving it with the throttle" will get you killed. And whats the point of that anyway. Your run is already done.
Also note that he is dialed in at 12.30, even a "slow" car can get you killed if you are not properly prepared.
Rollbar,harness,securely mounted seat.
