William Taggart Sr.
William Taggart Sr. Nov. 11, 1927 - Mar. 3, 2007 Resident of Richmond Bill Taggart passed away at home at the age of 79, surrounded by family and friends. A native of Pennsylvania, then moved to the Bay Area in 1946. He was preceded in death in 1971 by his wife of 22 years, Evelyn Taggart; and also his father, Walter Taggart; mother, Sarah Taggart; sister, Ida Bender; and brother, Walt Taggart. He is survived by Edie, his loving wife of 22 years; his daughter, Kathy King and son-in-law, Lee; and his son, Bill Taggart and his daughter-in-law, Vienna. He was also a cherished grandpa of 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Bill served in the Navy aboard the ship the USS Boxer. He was a middle - weight boxer and represented his ship in all ports. While on leave, Bill met his wife Evelyn in 1947. After leaving the navy he worked as a welder for Chevron in Richmond from 1957 to 1965. Opening his own business, Taggart's Auto Clinic in Richmond from 1965 until he retired in 2001. Bill was an avid bowler, but mostly a dedicated drag racer. His racing career spanned 6 decades. From 1967-1972 served as track manager of Vacavalley Raceway. In the mid '70s he assumed the management position of Redding Dragstrip, before moving to Infineon Raceway where he was in charge of the drag racing program. From 1988 up until health problems forced him to retire in 2002, he served as a tech inspector at Infineon Raceway. Along with his managing and officiating of many race tracks, he was also a very accomplished and respected driver, with over 500 wins in his career. In his legacy he was also involved in the movies. Bill and his son had their cars in American Graffiti and Hotrod. Working with producers to insure racing scenes were authentic, and loaning all their equipment with pride. Most of all Bill was a devoted, loving and caring husband, father and grandpa that loved getting together with all his family and friends. He loved telling stories of his life and reminiscing. We have lost our father, our best friend and our mentor. WE LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU DADDY. Services will be held Sat., March 10, 2007 at 3 p.m. at Macarthur Community Baptist Church, 2301 Rumrill Blvd., San Pablo, CA 94806. Also a memorial will be held Sat., March 17 at Infineon Raceway at 1 p.m. FAMILY & FRIENDS WELCOME.
