Hello all
I have been looking in the rule book and cant seem to find an aswer. As some of you know I am building a FED according to the Mark Williams blueprint it says that a slip joint must be used where the main roll cage hoop meets the shoulder hoop. My question is, can I use mild steel instead of 4130. The shoulder hoop is 1 5/8 .058 and i just happen to have some 1 1/2 .083 Mild steel laying around can I use this instead of my 1 1/2 4130 ?
Thanks

The MW print and NHRA rule book do not have the info you need to build a chassis. Get the correct SFI spec book for your application. www.sfifoundation.com/drag.htmlJohn

I believe you may be misreading the Williams print. I have one at home I will check tonight but as I recall they are talking about a splice in the shoulder hoop. I believe it is misworded on the print.
Also I think they use the word "may" rather than "must" but I'll check tonight.
You really should buy the correct spec sheet from SFI for the category you will be running.
I have never seen any mention of any mild steel tube being less than .118 wall tickness so my guess is that you cannot use the .083 stuff anywhere. Having said that, if you used it only inside the CM tubing for the sleeve only how would anyone ever check it out?

The MW print says...
"wheather hoop is seemed or one piece reinforcing tube must be in place with visable rosette welds"
I did read that MS must be a min wall of .118 but no where does it say about reinforcing tubes.
I will order the SFI book asap.
jdrag I always beleived that if the MW williams print was used in conjunction with there chassis kit the dragster would be able to pass a cert for NHRA. Is this not the case ? I know that the prints were designed to be used when building there chassis kits so the measurments on the prints I figured were accurate and within the SFI spec that MW says it is good for.

With all the time, work and money you will put into building a chassis it would be a shame to not pass NHRA/SFI cert because of a not up to date blueprint. Read the 15 page SFI booklet and best of luck on your project.

I believe the Mark Williams plans are for building a car that will certify down to 7.50 et and maybe lower. There is a seperate SFI spec sheet for those type of chassis (FED)
If building a 10.00 et or slower car all that is required is to follow the layout in the NHRA rulebook.
