Hello, I have a 355 ci with 19 passes on it and my gear drive idler decided to blow up, I was having erratic timing, checked every thing under the sun, so I pulled the cover and the idler bar was bent outward, idler gears flopping around, the c-clips missing and all needle bearings gone. I dropped the pan and found everything in the bottom. There appears to be no damage to the cam, cam button or the cam bearings, timing cover is damaged. My question is has anyone ever seen or heard of this before. I don't know the manufacture of the gear drive, I did not do the assembly of the engine. Cam is a solid roller .645/.620. I am just after some suggestions before the reassembly processes other than what the manufacture of the gear drive suggest, I have not purchased one yet. Thanks for any help/suggestions

Hi Jeff...Yes, it not a real common occurence, but it does happen..I had one 'giveup' about weeks ago..Crank gear split in two taking the teeth off the idler and cam gear...Cam cant turn, but the rest of the motor does for a few revolutions...Took out 6 exh and 3 intake valves; four rods hit the cam making them just about useless and the cam lobes may have be tweeked too...
"stuff happens"..

Get rid of the gear drive it happens too often. buy a good roller chain, you will increase your power just by changing, do to the drag the gear drive produces. Or even better yet go to a belt thats the best, but costly. Ken

If the crank gear splits it is because the chamfer on the gear and the crank don't match . Chuck

The builder stepped up and got me a Cloyes doubler roller Hex-A-Just chain, any news on how these are? Cloyes has their 2 piece cover with the built in cam button, I am thinking about getting, was wondering if anyone has used this cover or has heard any thing good or bad about it. Cloyes makes one of if not the best roller chain setups out there. The double idler gear drives have shed there fare share of heartache on many racers over the years. As far as gear drives go, your best to stay with the single idler types like Milodon, Donovan, KB. We have always run the Milodon single idler gear drives on all of our cam driven fuel pump fuel injected drag racing engines and have not had any trouble with them.
